The mission of the Venice Family Clinic is to improve the health of people and communities through accessible, quality care. The Clinic provides comprehensive primary health care and support services to low income, uninsured and homeless men, women and children in Los Angeles County's West Health District.
The Atlas Family Foundation provided seed funding for program development and initial operating funds to support the new Child Development Case Management program addressing a critical opportunity for enhanced and coordinated pediatric care for young children through the integration of preventive care, developmental assessment, education, referrals and follow-up benefiting young children in low income and mostly minority families. This pilot program has improved access to an array of child enrichment and development services at Venice Family Clinic and at outside referral agencies. It has also assisted parents to better understand their children's growth and development as integral to health and empowered them to become active participants in their children's healthcare. Earlier detection of problems will lead to earlier intervention and the hope for better outcomes for children and families.
The economic environment continues to be challenging. Costs for care has been increasing while reimbursements have been declining or just plain eliminated. At the same time, more and more families are seeking services because of job loss, and consequently, employer-related health insurance coverage. For these reasons, our most recent grant will focus on primary care for children ages 0–3. Primary care visits for these young children include a medical and psychosocial history, physical exam, hearing screening, oral health assessment, developmental screening, medications, lab work and referrals for further specialty and supportive care as needed.
